THE BREAKDOWN
Intriguing prospect because JOHNSTON has most prototype build and skill set in this years draft. Around 6’4ft and 210 LBS he has large catch radius and compliments that radius with great ball skills. He is able to track and attack the ball at the highest point. Furthermore, he can contort and control his body to adjust to the ball in mid air.
JOHNSTONS struggles with separation at times, especially on shallow routes because of his length -going in and out of breaks is more difficult – He is little stiff in the hips. He has great speed and explosion that needs to be respected. At times he “cradle” catches instead of using his hands. The biggest issue has been some easy concentration drops this year – something that is not a major concern but certainly frustrating and can plague WR’s mentally.
Breakout games make up the bulk of JOHNSTONS production. Sometimes it may be a game plan issue or scheme but still concerning when taking a WR potentially in the TOP 10. You would like to see dominate production as the go to guy.
Regardless, his physical gifts are rare in the NFL and any team looking for that alpha X WR will be in the market for JOHNSTONS services. His forgiving catch radius, and ball skills with be a QB’s best friend. Not to mention the potential might be the highest in this WR class.
