Breakdown

Khalil Herbert might not be on many draft boards because he has had a strange NCAA journey. Originally playing for Kansas for his first 4 years, he never really got the rock like he should have and transferred to Virginia Tech just before his eligibility cut off, as a last shot at the NFL. It paid off and he had a great 5th year senior year with VT, rushing for over 1,000 yards and 7.6 yards per carry. He possesses NFL size being almost 215lbs at 5’9ft, while having some serious burst and speed. He is a patient runner that sets up his blocks really well before exploding for big gains. He can hold his own in pass protection, but wasn’t asked to catch the ball very much. I would like to see him run more violently using that frame and low center of gravity to finish runs and punish defenders.

Herbert was subject to terrible coaching circumstances that has derailed his college career. He was able to salvage his career, but would have most likely been in the NFL already if he was with Virginia Tech to begin with. He should be a steal if he drops past the 3rd round, he has potential to be a solid NFL starter.
